Thedford I. Hitaffer is a patent attorney who has been registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) since 1994. He is a founding partner of Hitaffer, PLLC.
Mr. Hitaffer has extensive experience in intellectual property matters, including the preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications. He counsels clients in a wide range of intellectual property matters and assists in managing intellectual property portfolios. He also has experience licensing patents and technology, providing product clearance, invalidity and non-infringement opinions, monitoring competitor patent activity, investigating controversies and assisting in the enforcement of intellectual property rights.
Mr. Hitaffer has represented independent inventors, small to mid-sized businesses and large corporate clients across a wide range of technologies. His practice focuses on the mechanical and electro-mechanical arts, as well as software-related inventions.
He has extensive experience working with automotive technologies, including interior components, frames, axles, drive shafts, transmissions, braking and occupant safety systems; building materials such as insulation, roofing systems, composite materials and asphalt products, as well as the processes, machines and tools used to manufacture them; metal-cutting products including drills, drill inserts and saws; medical devices including wheelchairs, walking aids, beds, respiratory equipment and daily living aids; recreational sporting goods; and numerous other technologies.
Mr. Hitaffer is registered to practice before the USPTO (Reg. No. 38,490) and has been practicing in the field of intellectual property law for more than three decades. He is licensed to practice law in Virginia and is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Mr. Hitaffer has been active in several professional organizations. He is a former member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and has served on various committees. He has also been a member of the Intellectual Property Section of both the American Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar. In addition, he has served on the Board of Directors of the Greater Richmond Intellectual Property Law Association and previously served as Chairman of the Membership Committee of the Michigan Intellectual Property Association.
